The objective of the work reported herein was to determine experimentally the shell-to-head junction stresses for certain steel thin-shell pressure vessels. The types of heads which were used during the study were a torispherical head, a two-to-one ellipsoidal head, a 90-deg toriconcial head and a 120-deg toriconical head. The test vessels which were used were commercial type vessels and the internal pressure did not exceed 15 psi. The information grained during this investigation can be used in checking the validity of certain pressure-vessel-stress theories. It is hoped that it will also prove to be useful in the design of thin-shell pressure vessels.
