The great potential of welding automation has long been recognized by welding-related industries and has attracted a large number of engineers into the booming international market of welding automation, especially robotics. In this respect, it is very important for the engineers involved in research and development in this multidisciplinary area to become familiar with the experience of their colleagues abroad, to be aware of their successes and failures in concepts and approaches, and to utilize this priceless knowledge in their future work.
The following study is intended to familiarize the U.S. and international welding communities with technical ideas and their implementation in the USSR, a country which has a long and rich history of welding automation development. For this reason, about 300 articles published in the USSR over the last three decades on the related subject were analyzed, with 177 of them being referenced.
