Recent droughts in the United Kingdom have highlighted the significance of the needfor water efficiency, leakage control and reduce the demand for water. At the sametime there are proposals for significant housing development throughout the United Kingdom some ofwhich are planned within regions with scarce available water resources. Thesefactors have resulted in new guidelines for housing development that take account ofthe issues surrounding climate change, carbon footprint and water conservation. The paper outlines common themes of the water demand management components oftwo urban development projects in the southeast of England. One project was amultidisciplinary integrated water management study, the objectives of which were toreview the current problems with the water environment, establish the key constraintsto growth that might arise as a result of the proposed development and to identifydemand management strategies to accommodate the proposed expansion.
