This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of distribution system water quality. A new design paradigm is presented of reversing the design concept that hasexisted for nearly 200 years bydesigning potable systems with 2 to 4-inch lines, anddesigning reclaimed water systems to handle fireflow and reclaimed water uses. Such a switch in design conditions promoteshighly treated potable water to meet futurewater quality demands without inherent systemissues caused by large diameter pipesneeded to provide fire flow. The presentation examines producing easily accessible reclaimedwater for a variety of uses by centralized vs decentralized systems, provides criteria for satellite treatment, considerations for treatment technology selection, retrofitting a community, and presents a hypothetical example of using dual distribution systems at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Includes tables, figures.
