Full Description

The effect of chlorine on copper corrosion was studied in pipe rig experimentsaccording to the German standard DIN 50931-1. Depending on the stagnation time, thedosage of chlorine can decrease or increase the copper release to drinking waters. Thepresence of chlorine or chloric additives interferes with the copper corrosion due tooxygen. That is why the copper release is lower in shorter stagnation times and higherin longer stagnation times. Therefore, the kinetic of the corrosion process is important.Furthermore, microorganisms have a high influence on copper release from newinstallation pipes in the first weeks of operation, which is called initialization phase. Themicrobiological settlement on new copper pipes occurs in a few weeks. The effect ofdisinfection on hypochlorous acid hindered the settlement on copper pipes, and lowercopper concentrations occur in the first weeks of operation. In addition, phosphate hasa decreasing influence on the corrosion process in this study also in the chlorinatedwater. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
