Description / Abstract: Material Description. This standard describes welding procedures, process details, and acceptance criteria for repair of gray cast iron engine block and lower crank case castings segregated at the foundry. Both engine block and lower crankcase will be referred to as “block” in the following context.

This procedure is intended to be used for weld repair of unpainted, un-machined castings, and only in areas designated in the casting supplier’s process control plan. Finished machined parts may be considered for repair welding with approval from appropriate GM Powertrain Engineering Departments.

This procedure is not intended for repair of large casting defects. Casting porosity which does not conform to agreed upon porosity standards must not be repair welded.

Repair of misruns and cracks are not permitted.

Cylinder block regions that may be considered for weld repair include block front and rear faces, crankcase (skirt) walls, bosses (excluding head, bearing cap/bedplate, and engine mounting), and starter flange. Defects eligible for weld repair shall be agreed to between the responsible GM Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) and the supplier and shall be included in the process control plan and/or quality document. Any deviations from this specification must be approved by the responsible GM Powertrain Product Engineering Department.

Symbols. Not applicable.

Applicability. Decision to repair weld gray iron cylinder block castings with defined defect type, size and locations shall be agreed to between the responsible GM Powertrain DRE and block supplier.
