Full Description

The Denver Water Department in Denver, Colorado has "institutionalized" a continuous water conservation program. Since water demand for lawn irrigation accounts for 80 percent of domestic water use in the department's service area during the summer months, the water department has targeted water that is wasted for lawn and garden irrigation as the most important and immediate source of water savings. The author describes Denver's program of issuing daily evapotranspiration forecasts, assisting customers in planning low-waterdemand landscaping, and restricting outside water use if shortfalls in treatment capacity occur. Also discussed are water reuse programs employed by the Denver Water Department, as well as stipulations placed on the newly built Foothills treatment plant. Education and public information tactics used by the Department are also covered. Includes 5 references, table, figures.
