Postprecipitation is defined as the precipitation of certain compounds in the distribution system after the water has been treated and is also referred to in the industry as corrosion-tubercules, deposition, encrustation, growth, scale, scum, sediment, and slime. This article discusses causes, effects, and prevention of postprecipitation of calcium carbonate, iron (corrosion), lead, zinc, aluminum, magnesium, manganese, polyelectrolytes, and microbiological growth. Periodic sampling is recommended to determine if postprecipitation problems are present. Includes 24 references.
