Full Description

The feasibility of directly treating processed wastewater plant effluent to potable quality is being tested in Denver, Colorado, with a full-scale, 1-mgd (3.8-ML/d) demonstration plant. Special features of the demonstration plant are described including the treatment train, the plant's computer system, and safety considerations. Details of the construction and start-up phases of plant operation are given. Results to-date and plans for health effects research, and programs to gain public acceptance of direct reuse are also addressed. This project is expected to provide the information necessary to evaluate the feasibility of direct reuse, especially for cities located in waterscarce areas where development of more conventional water resources is becoming increasingly costly, both in terms of the environment and in capital investments. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
