Odor threshold testing has demonstrated the wide variation in the normal olfactory sensitivities of a population and the common occurrence of specific anosmia, or "smell blindness." Continuing research on specific anosmia is leading toward a new fundamental classification of odors. The relationship between the classification of odors and the descriptive terms used for taste and odor problems in water is discussed, with special reference to the earthy-musty odor.
