Uncontrolled algal growth can quickly compromise the taste, odor and appearance of impounded water. Algae are also an important source of the organic compounds that form carcinogenic byproducts in the presence of chlorine disinfectants and can promote the growth of unwanted bacteria in open reservoirs. The Remote Electro-Optical Sensor (REOS) product line was developed by Biospherical Instruments Inc. and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to provide reservoir managers with the daily data needed to recognize and intercept incipient algal blooms in drinking water reservoirs before water quality is degraded. This paper describes the REOS system and its algal bloom detection capabilities. The third generation (REOS-3) system has additional monitoring and reporting capabilities and can, for example, support the calculation of a nephelometric turbidity equivalent.
