Full Description

On January 1, 2000, some 80 million computers around the world will attempt to process a "00" year. Without Year 2000 compliance assured, some computers will crash, some programs will halt, others will create countless errors. Worse yet, some programs will produce slightly errant or corrupt data that will be assumed valid because it will not be readily detected. Consistent with their strategic planning process, many companies and utilites are retaining consultants to assist them with what is loosely called the Year 2000 Problem. Although the use of experts is certainly acceptable, utilities can take steps to ensure that their computer systems are immune from Year 2000 related problems. This paper discusses the Year 2000 Problem and presents a methodology that utilities can follow to take corrective action, including step by step procedures.
