Full Description

During the last several years, the El Nino phenomenon has received wide publicity in the media throughout the world. El Nino and its close relative, La Nina, have been identified as the principal driving force of the weather patterns not only around the Pacific, but also in many other parts of the world. Significant advances in the understanding of the atmospheric processes have been made since scientists working in this field made their discoveries early this century. The period of the last twenty years has been particularly fruitful, because of the effort spent in establishing the global weather patterns following the extremely strong El Nino events of the early 1980s. This paper is aimed at summarizing briefly the current knowledge on the subject from the viewpoint of a water resources manager located in the Asia-Pacific region.
