LFR Levine-Fricke (LFR) performed comprehensive water reclamation studies in 1990and 1998 for a federal Superfund site ("the site") in the Santa Clara Valley,located in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Hundreds ofgroundwater cleanup sites are located in the Santa Clara Valley where numeroussemiconductor and related electronics manufacturing facilities are located.Conserving water is of particular importance in the Santa Clara Valley where thegrowing population places increasing demands on the groundwater supply. LFR's1990 water reclamation study identified and evaluated potential reuse options fortreated groundwater at the site. Several groundwater recharge and waterreclamation options were evaluated: groundwater recharge to a local creek, reuseof the treated water as process water for the facility's manufacturingoperations, reuse as landscape irrigation water, and off-site reclamationoptions. On-site water reuse and groundwater recharge (via surface spreading)were selected and implemented at the site in 1992. Since 1992, approximately 436million gallons of treated water have been reused/recharged at the site. In1998, the authors evaluated the feasibility of reinjecting treated groundwater.This evaluation was conducted because of the numerous benefits related to directinjection of the treated groundwater to the underlying aquifers, as well as thereduced demand for treated effluent due to changes in the facility's operations.This paper briefly describes the water issues in California and how water reclamation activities at the site relate to regional water management and usestrategies.
