Wood-based granular activated carbon (GAC) has been used successfully both inpilot applications and in full-scale filter applications, but its durability during backwashing has not been evaluated in a side-by-side study with bituminous coal-based GAC. The objective of this study was to compare the durability of these two types of GAC when subjected to 500 cycles of backwashing with an air-water wash system. GAC durability was evaluated by measuring the change in carbon bed height, pressure drop, filter effluent water quality, and particle characteristics as a function of backwashing. The results showed that the durability of the wood-based and the coal-based GAC was similar throughout the duration of the study. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
