Full Description

Across North America and specifically in Canada, the epoxy resin lining processis becoming an acceptable alternative to complete replacement of older cast ironmains. At the present time, there are at least five (5) epoxy resin products thathave achieved NSF approval since 1995. Epoxy lining started in the province ofQuebec in 1995, followed by the province of Ontario in 1998 and there have beenother applications in other parts of Canada and in the United States. The Regionof Ottawa-Carleton, which caters to approximately 1 million customers, owns andoperates over 2,400 km (1,500 miles) of water mains throughout its territory.Since 1997, the Region of Ottawa-Carleton has used the epoxy resin method to dealwith water quality issues, as well as reduced water pressures in areas where thestructural integrity of the host pipe is not in doubt. This paper outlinesthe construction issues that were dealt with, such as: responsibilities for thetemporary overland services; isolation of the projected working area; operationof curb stops and valves; communication within the different Regional departmentsand with the home owners; and, lastly, on-site quality control issues. Most ofthe above mentioned issues were discussed prior to the commencement of theproject and during the project. The Region has adopted a very proactive andcomprehensive approach in handling any issues as they appear, with the help oftheir specialized consultant.
