Following the purchase of the Evansburg Water Company and abandonment of its gourndwater supply sources, Pennsylvania-American Water Company (PAWC) began supplying water to this distribution system by means of a new water transmission main. To assure that adequate disinfectant residual was maintained in this remote distribution system, a chloramine booster station was designed and constructed at the entry point to the newly acquired system. While booster chlorine stations are common, this appears to be one of the first remote stations in the US for the purpose of boosting chloramine levels. This report addresses the various design and operation issues as well as the associated water chemisty issues, such as nitrification and undesireable chloramine species. The chloramine booster station uses sodium hypochlorite and aqueous ammonia. The facility is designed to provide easy access to the water main, chemical injection points, flow meter, sampling points, pumps and analyzers all within the treatment building. The chloramine booster station has the capability to dose either chloramines or hypochlorite depending upon the disinfection method utilized at the main water treatment plant. In addition to discussing the design considerations for this facility, this report also addresses the unique chemistry issues involved in adding chlorine and ammonia to chloraminated water at a satellite station. Proper dosing levels and an appropriate chlorine-to-ammonia ratio are essential to avoiding nitrification, undesirable chloramine species (di- and tri-chloramines), coliform regrowth, and Trihalomethane (THM) formation. The sampling locations near the point of application allow close examination of the chloramination chemistry. The flexibility designed into the dosing system allows for modifications to be made quickly and easily. Includes figure.
