The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been conducting research to develop several new drinking water methods for the analysis of oxyhalide disinfection byproducts and disinfection residuals, since the Stage 1 Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproducts (D/DBP) Rule was promulgated. These new methods, which EPA anticipates proposing in the new Stage 2 DBP rule, offer significant technical improvements when compared to the existing methods. Included in this list are two new methods for the analysis of oxyhalides and low-level bromate that utilize novel postcolumn chemistries to improve method sensitivity for bromate; a new method for haloacetic acids with improved sensitivity, precision, and accuracy; and two new colorimetric assays for monitoring chlorine dioxide and chlorite at treatment plants. This paper briefly summarizes the scientific principles behind these new and/or improved methods and highlights the improvements that each new method offers in terms of selectivity, sensitivity, accuracy, precision and ease of use.
