Full Description

Communicating water-related risks can be complex. Successfullygetting the word out depends on knowing diversefactors such as the literacy level of the group, specificconcerns of the audience members, the best method of delivery, and audience perception about "experts." Although several articleshave addressed drinking water-related health risk communicationconcerns, no comprehensive peer-reviewed publication hascritically examined the lessons learned about communicatingthese risks. In a two-day workshop, researchers and practitioners from theUnited States, Canada, and the United Kingdom gathered to discusslessons learned and emerging issues to develop recommendations forimproving water-related health risk communication. Workshop participantsstressed that water utilities need to educate their staff on theimportance of risk communication and that risk communication shouldbe a board-level responsibility receiving adequate resources. Utilitymanagers could also look to the experience of other industries tolearn from and build on the lessons they have learned. Includes 16 references, figure.
