The Newark Water Treatment Plant is a 15-mgd facility that provides drinkingwater to the City of Newark, Ohio. The raw water source is the Licking River. Theexisting treatment train includes preoxidation, lime softening,coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, recarbonation, filtration, fluoridation, andchlorination. To provide another barrier of protection, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is beingincorporated. Initial investigation included an assessment of three alternativepost-filtration locations for the UV reactors. Based on economic and non-economicevaluation criteria, dedicating a UV reactor to each filter was selectedas the alternative of choice for implementation. This paper outlines how theunique design challenges associated with this strategy were resolved. Includes tables.
