As the use of chloramination becomes more widelypracticed, some utility managers may questionwhether long-term exposure to chloramines willcompromise the functioning and/or shorten the life oftheir rubber gasketed ductile-iron pipe joints. The paper discusses why special elastomers forductile-iron pipe joints are not required in water systemsusing chloramination for disinfection. Specifically, the effect of chloramines on nitriles, styrene butadiene, neoprenes, ethylene-propylene, and fluorocarbons isexamined. The author concludes that the effect ofchloramine on elastomers is application-specific, butthat chloramination will not compromise the life ofelastomer gaskets supplied with push-on and mechanicaljoint ductile-iron pipe.
