Microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane processes are at a critical stage in their development. The watertreatment community needs to consolidate the dispersed knowledge on these processes into asingle source that can be readily used as a reference to support the transition of membranetechnology to large-scale applications (greater than 100 MGD). In addition, water systemsconsidering smaller applications need a single, reliable and usable source of information onexisting membrane installations to support informed decisions when determining the suitabilityof membranes for their purposes. In order to respond to these needs, a low-pressure membraneknowledge base is being developed. The knowledge base will provide the drinking watercommunity with a valuable tool to accomplish these important objectives. This paper presentsthe tasks in the development of the MF/UF knowledge base and the results of the study. The knowledge base contains three components: survey of literature; survey of vendorinstallations; and, survey of plant owners and operators. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
