Full Description

The objective of this research was to examine relationships between specific ultravioletabsorbance (SUVA) and the amenability of water to enhanced coagulation to demonstratethat the removal of total organic carbon, UV-absorbing organics, and disinfection byproductprecursors is a function of the raw water SUVA value. Theory and previousstudies suggest that SUVA (defined as UV254 normalized with respect to dissolvedorganic carbon) is a useful indicator of the characteristics of dissolved organic matter inrelation to its susceptibility to coagulation and its reactivity with chlorine. Data collectedand assimilated under the Information Collection Rule, the largest nationwide waterquality survey ever conducted, were analyzed to investigate the association between rawwater SUVA and the Enhanced Coagulation matrix as outlined in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Stage 1Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule. Includes 21 references, tables, figures.
