Full Description

This research investigated the use of the ion exchangeprocess for the treatment of perchlorate-contaminated drinkingwater. Fifteen commercially available resins from five manufacturerswere tested. Computer models were used to evaluatetreatment options, some of which were not typical ionexchange applications. Three treatment approaches emergedas viable options to reduce perchlorate to concentrations belowproposed maximum contaminant levels: partialexhaustion-regeneration using polyacrylic resins, with aprocess similar to current nitrate treatment techniques;partial exhaustion-regeneration using polystyrene resins withelevated temperature regeneration; and, use of highly selectiveresins for perchlorate with resin replacement followingexhaustion.Water suppliers can use this information to help determinewhich ion exchange treatment option will most efficiently removeperchlorate from their drinking water sources. Selecting the bestoption requires water quality information (i.e., concentration ofmajor and minor anions) as well as site-specific information (i.e.,access to brine disposal). Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
