Full Description

At a time when the safety and security of services wehave typically taken for granted are under question, areal-time or near real-time method of monitoring changesin water quality parameters could provide a critical lineof defense in protecting public health. This study wasundertaken to determine the feasibility of using waterquality sensors as part of a contaminant warning system.Commercially available water quality sensors arecapable of triggering a contamination warning systemusing standard water quality parameters. When contaminantsare injected into a water line, they cause thewater quality parameters such as chlorine and totalorganic carbon to change. These changes are themechanism that can be used to detect the presence ofcontaminants. The result of this research supports thedual benefit of adding on-line water quality monitoringto the distribution system, thereby improving bothsecurity and water quality.
