This paperexplains how the city of Kansas City is shaping its leadership team so that they have both the visionto conceive strategies, and the ability to implement those strategies successfully.The city of Kansas City has undergone a transformation over the past few years to render its capitalimprovement management program into an efficient and effective operation. A new organizationalstructure has been adopted and new leadership is in place. To ensure the success of the neworganization, the new leadership team members are being equipped with the skills needed tomaintain the momentum created in the newly launched Capital Improvement Management Office(CIMO). The transformation that has occurred is the result of the selection of the right people,putting them into the right positions and providing the right education to allow them to succeed.The on-going leadership agenda has included these elements:Strategic Goals Setting Workshop;Four Leadership Development Courses Focused on the Fundamental Principles ofLarge Capital Improvement Program Management,Project Management, Communications and Presentations, andNegotiations; Strategic Initiatives Review and Renewal Workshop;Annual 360 Degree Reviews of Leadership Staff;Leadership Mentoring; and,Cooperative development of education courses designed for leaders' work teams with leadersserving as co-facilitators.This paper details each of these areas and how they are integrated around the ultimate goal ofself-sustaining leadership excellence.
