Full Description

The urban Santa Ana River in California is the primarysource of recharge water for Orange County'sgroundwater basin, which provides water to more thantwo million residents. This study was undertaken todetermine the unidentified portion of dissolved organicmatter (DOM) in various natural surface and reclaimedwaters of the Santa Ana River Basin and to assess thepotential health risk of this material. The most abundant organic contaminants wereanionic detergent degradation products (constitutingabout 12% of the DOM), which have no knownadverse health effects. In addition, high percentages ofdissolved colloids from bacterial cell walls were foundduring storm flows; these colloids foul membranes usedin water treatment. Although no significant health riskswere ascribed to the newly characterized DOM, theauthors note that even the small amounts of humicsubstances deposited during storm flow periods wereresponsible for significant increases in disinfection byproductformation potential in these waters. Includes 23 references, tables, figures.
