Localized or pitting corrosion of copper pipes used inhousehold plumbing is a problem for some homeowners.Extreme attack can lead to pinhole leaks that may resultin water damage, mold growth, and costly repairs. Theobjective of this research was to better define the specificwater quality conditions that support pitting corrosion.Pilot-scale pipe rig testing found that pitting corrosionoccurred in waters with low chlorine concentrationsand dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrationsof 5 and 10 mg/L C (and possibly 25 mg/L C)and pH 9 water in the presence of chloride.Orthophosphate and increased DIC concentrationsprevented the initiation of localized corrosion. Watersuppliers considering changes in treatment and watersources can use this information to avoid conditionsthat support localized corrosion of copper. Includes 40 references, tables.
