Full Description

Concerns about water quality and possible intentionalcontamination of water distribution systems aremaking online monitoring an increasingly importantpriority for many water utilities. The authors used asuite of modeling tools to develop a practical anddefensible approach to detecting both security-relatedcontamination events and natural water qualitychanges in drinking water distribution systems. The authors' conclusions demonstrate the value ofusing a modeling approach when monitoring locationsare selected. These conclusions can help a utilitydevelop a defensible approach to water qualitymonitoring in its distribution system. Use of amodeling approach to monitor location selectionoptimizes the use of utility dollars while maximizingpublic health protection. The presentation of actualon-line data is illustrative of the need to providethis type of monitoring to better understand bothtreatment and distribution systemprocesses. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
