Changes in water treatment processes not only affectprimary objectives but also bring about secondarybenefits or detriments. This article examines the typesof secondary (and possibly unintended) effects that canbe triggered by implementation of various columntreatment technologies for arsenic removal.To meet the new arsenic standards, many smallutilities may select strong-base anion exchange, activatedalumina, or granular ferric hydroxide/granularferric oxide media because of their lower capital cost.However, these technologies can result in lead dissolutionfrom brass fittings and solder, higher levels ofiron corrosion, and an increase in copper pitting ofplumbing.When making their decisions about which process toimplement for arsenic removal, water providers shouldconsider the secondary effects of implementing certaintreatment processes. For those utilities that alreadyhave these treatment processes in place, this study willenable them to be proactive in checking for possiblecorrosion problems in the distribution system or inconsumers' homes.
