The gap between water supply and demand is growingworldwide, especially in nations such as China thatare undergoing rapid economic development. Wastewaterreuse offers a potential solution to help alleviate thiscrisis, essentially providing a "new" source, i.e.,reclaimed water, for industrial production and agriculturaland landscape irrigation while decreasing thepressure on high-quality supplies.A wastewater reclamation system was designed forthe Taocheng District of Hengshui (TDH), China,which is suffering both a water crisis and financiallimitations. The project incorporates a sewage treatmentplant, natural waterways, and constructed wetlands.In addition to providing treated effluent for useas cooling water at a power station, the proposedsystem would help revitalize the existing wastewatertreatment plant, enhance the local landscape with awetland environment, and promote land values in thearea. A cost-benefit analysis indicates the economicand noneconomic benefits of the project make it aviable and sustainable solution for TDH and otherregions facing water shortages.
