Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of hydrogen sulfide and the city of Santa Barbara's problem with elevated levels of sulfide and manganese. Granular ferric oxide (GFO) media was chosen as the treatment option for the pilot plant and testing protocol is presented, along with results of the following: effect of sulfide on the iron media;treatment system performance (sulfide, iron, andmanganese);media and filter runtimes; and, backwash water quantity and quality. Media usage rate and replacement costs are provided, and conclusions indicate the following: sulfide removal with iron media followed by sand/anthracite filtration isviable;both media and filter are in pressure vessels;the only chemical added is chlorine;media replacement cost could be high depending on sulfide level, but still beats the alternative;for the city, the cost could be as high as $380/AF for mediareplacement; and,the city is planning to proceed with the design of the plant retrofitto accommodate the new treatment system. Includes tables, figures.
