Full Description

A major concern in the design of heating systems is the elimination of objectionable cold drafts from windows or other surfaces exposed to severe outdoor conditions. This problem usually has been solved by installing convectors, warm air diffusing units or some other type of heating equipment under the exposed surface in order to counteract the effect of the draft with a flow of warm air.

In many cases today, either for architectural reasons or because of code requirements, it is not possible to solve the problem in this manner. Under these circumstances, the designer frequently has to resort to introducing the heated air from above the cold surface. The designer faeed with such a task has had very little information upon which to base his design in the past.

The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to investigate the behavior of downward-directed heated jets flowing over cold vertical surfaces, to examine the feasibility of applying them as a solution to the cold draft problem, and finally to present the results obtained in a form applicable to design.
