Full Description

Program Objective: The objective of this program was to identify a simple, reproducible method for measuring the size distribution of fine solid particles in industrial gas streams. A set of specifications for the method was supplied by ASHRAE. The principal requirements were that the method function in the 0.5 to 10 micron and larger size range, that it yield particle size in terms of aerodynamic diameter, that it operate under a wide variety of gas stream conditions (-60 to 800 degrees C, particle concentrations of 0.02 to 20 grams/m3, water content to saturation) , that It be compatible with isokinetic sampling requirements, and that it yield rapid (on site) output of size data. More than one method (instrument) was permitted in view of the wide range of conditions specified.

Approach: A survey and critical evaluation of current particle sizing technology was conducted to determine whether currently available methods would suffice. New approaches and modifications of current methods were also considered.
