Full Description

Shading coefficients for regular and heat-absorbing glasses with interior shadinghave been established. Information on reflective coated glasses with draperiesis limited due to the relatively few experimental verifications which have beenperformed to date. Solar calorimeter evaluation formed the basis for the valuesappearing in the ASHRAE HANDBOOK OF FUNDAMENTALS. The purpose of this investigationwas to verify the data on reflective coated glasses and draperies presentedin the 1972 HANDBOOK OF FUNDAMENTALS.

This paper contains shading coefficients based upon experiments coveringfive commercially available reflective insulating glass panels and three representativedraperies. Each glass was experimentally evaluated and analyzed witheach of these draperies. In general, the reflective panels consisted of two42 in. x 42 in. x 1/4 in. plates of clear glass separated by a 1/2 in. air spacewith a reflective coating on one of the glass surfaces facing the air space. Forconvenience ASHRAE has numbered the surfaces of glazing systems with respect tothe outdoor surface of the glass. This convention is used in this paper to describethe location of the reflective coatings. Fig. 1 illustrates this exampleand identifies the surfaces which will be referenced in this report. The threedrapery materials used are classified by color and weave according to ASHRAEclassifications IM, IIM, IIIL.
