Some understanding of human requirements for windows in buildings can be obtained through an evaluation of the research on the reaction to spaces with and without windows. This review suggests that acceptance of a windowless room is governed by characteristics of the room itself. Benefits provided by windows include view out, daylight, sunshine, and a sense of spaciousness. The paper summarizes NBS Building Science Series Publication #170.
