Full Description

Several articles have been published in the ASHRAE Journal, and elsewhere, dealing with load calculations for subway stations, heat sink effect, piston action of trains entering and leaving stations, flared ventilation shafts, and smoke control. This article will attempt to deal with specific design problems encountered in the integrated thermal, station, structural, and electrical design of a subway station. Problems included the location and design of a 1350-ton underground central chilled water plant, underground cooling tower with plume (fog) control, access for maintenance and replacement, noise, aesthetics, coordination with structural designers, station designers, and electrical designers, ventilation of underground traction power substations, and variable flow chilled water secondary pumps, three-stage primary chilled water pumping system of the $43,000,000 MARTA Five Points subway station in Atlanta, Georgia.
