Full Description

The planning and design of a super-energy-conserving building was conducted during 1980 and 1981 by a project team of a Tokyo firm. Many energy-saving techniques were adopted, with the goal that annual energy consumption in the building be the smallest possible at that time. Heating and cooling loads, energy consumption, and cost-effectiveness were calculated and investigated. A double-skin with south-facing orientation was selected for the building as a major energy-saving technique. In order to clarify the influence of this technique, the thermal loads in a building with and without a double-skin were investigated, both for the perimeter zones and the building as a whole.
