This is the fifth article in our special seriesto commemorate a century of innovation in the HVACR arts and sciences.
The application of carbon dioxide (CO2) referigeration systems for comfort air cooling reached its highest point in the 1920s. The Depression caused a significant reduction in the number of installations and the advent of R-12 for comfort-cooling systems replaced the use of CO2 as the "safe" refrigerant.
