Full Description

Construction and renovation activities can act as strong sources of particulate and gaseous contaminants in buildings, causing indoor air quality problems for occupants. This is an important issue for engineers because of the part ventilation systems and exhaust systems play in removing or dispersing these contaminants. This paper describes the protocol developed as part of ASHRAE Research Project 961 to measure contaminant emissions during renovation and new construction. The protocol covers selection of suitable spaces for conducting measurements, acceptable test duration, choice of contaminant sampling locations, and information that must be collected for characterization of the activities. It also includes types of contaminants measured, contaminant measurement methods (both sampling and real-time), and other measurements made to ensure that test conditions are fully understood and that data obtained can be compared between buildings.
