Full Description

The aim of this paper is to report results from the field that make it possible to provide for comfortable indoor climate in hospital wards. In these environments, the basic conditions as well as needs of individuals (patients and nursing staff) vary to a large extent. These variations make it hard to optimize the indoor environment for everyone. Objective measurements and distribution of questionnaires were performed in an orthopedic ward. Questionnaires were distributed to learn the perception of the indoor environment. To assess the response to the questionnaires, indoor climate variables were measured simultaneously. Objective measurements and questionnaires are a good way to analyze the indoor environment in hospital buildings. Results show that staff and patients cannot be perceived as one coherent group. One example is that the preferred operative temperature is 18.5°C for the staff but 25°C for the patients.
