Energy modeling software has become an indispensable tool for engineering firms designing commercial buildings,especially when owner objectives involve green or sustainable building. Carrier Corporations Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) is one tool that participates in this market. In observance of the ASHRAE 125th anniversary, this paper intertwines the history of HAP with the history of energy modeling tools, specifically how advances in computer technology, engineering practice, and calculation methodologies have led to advancements in tools. This history also demonstrates how ASHRAE initiatives to advance state of the art of HVAC engineering can flow through software tools to benefit the industry.
